N. Hans Rechsteiner is a solo, independent, rural, general surgeon, practicing since 1982 for nearly 40 years in Spooner, Wisconsin. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is licensed in Minnesota and Wisconsin. His independence allows him the freedom to take care of his patients the way he was taught, with compassion and old-fashioned personal service. He even makes the occasional house call on his elderly folks.
He's interested in longevity and since 2012 has done longevity research on mice, running several trials with varied vitamin, supplement and medication formulas in a search of a formula that will extend the healthy lives of mice in the laboratory. Each trial takes at least 2.5 years to complete and he is currently finishing one that prolonged the lives of his mice by 50% over the controls.
He's written a book entitled How to Play College Football at 65. The book describes a lifestyle that will enable the reader to stay healthy and fulfill their “bucket list”, up to and including playing college football, after retirement! In the fall of 2017, at age 65, he played football at a small college in North Dakota, proving that the ideas in the book really do produce health and longevity.
His years of practice has allowed him to evaluate and appreciate the needs of his patients and create solutions for their problems. He has seen the negative effects of poor mental health on physical health. He has come to understand that mental health is often more important than, and dictates, one’s physical health.

Ketamine can be used for treatment-resistant depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), postpartum depression and suicidal ideation. 70% of those treated with ketamine responded to the drug according to a rating scale for depression.
Nitrous oxide works on some of the same pathways as ketamine. The nitrous treatment is similar to a ketamine treatment – resting in a comfortable chair to receive the medication for about 30-40 minutes but uses a soft mask to deliver the gas mixture instead of an injection. Nitrous has limited to no visual and sensation hallucination. A 2015 landmark study by Nagele found that two-thirds of patients with treatment-resistant depression experienced an improvement in symptoms after receiving nitrous oxide.
We offer nitrous as an alternative to ketamine for patients who don’t prefer the experience of ketamine, or who need to drive themselves (after a recovery period, of course).
Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and related species. It prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings at the neuromuscular junction and thus causes flaccid paralysis. Studies have shown a 40-80% improvement in depression with administration.
